Explore our Luxury Travel Destination of the Month & Discover the Magic of Mykonos
Date : 2017-09-25

Best known for its idyllic sea views and signature white villas with powder blue roofs, which reflect the picture perfect sky, Mýkonos was once amongst the poorest of the Greek Islands. During the late 1950s however, the island transformed into a mecca for the bohemian and glamorous traveller and is now one of the most renowned luxury destinations in the country.

Nightlife on Mykonos is lively, with a vibrant gay scene. There are an eclectic collection of restaurants and bars from which to choose; from romantic beachfront dinner spots to small family friendly cafes. Many of the eateries on the island are family run and pride themselves on serving mouthwateringly fresh and truly authentic greek dishes. For the shopaholics amongst us there is no shortage of clothing and jewellery boutiques on Mykonos, many of which are located in the main town, Hóra and are perfect for a spot of holiday retail therapy.

As for the sands, Mykonos offers a selection of popular powder white beaches, coupled with secluded coves and rugged shorelines for those seeking a more private setting for relaxing in the Mediteranean sun.

Whilst the Cyclades provide a beautiful holiday experience throughout the year, weather conditions are most desirable during Spring and early Autumn months. At these times tourism on Mykonos is at its peak and positive energy exudes from the main towns. When visiting Mykonos during the winter months, one will find the island to be quiet and predominently occupied by locals. Many of the larger hotels and resorts close their doors until the Spring, however there are still a selection of established boutique proerties, luxury villas and family run hotels from which to choose. Winter travellers may take advantage of car and motorbike hire, plus many exhilarating walks and hikes which are available across the island, as whilst the weather is often still warm and dry, conditions are better suited to activity than simply beachside rejuvination. Those who own property on Mykonos also tend to frequent the island during the winter period and often prefer it to 'peak' times of the year.

Beyond sampling delicious dishes, enjoying the varied nightlife and basking in the sun, there are many wonderful things to do and see whilst holidaying on Mykonos. Here are our pick of the top six:

  1.  Watch the Windmills -

Perhaps the most widely recognised postcard image and one of the most photographed sites on the island, the windmills were constructed in the 16th Century and are a magical piece of Mykonos heritage.

  2. Visit Little Venice -

In our opinion one of the most captivating areas of Mykonos, Little Venice is a truly idyllic setting in which to enjoy a traditional greek luncheon, or simply sip a fresh fruit juice (or fresh ouzo... in moderation of course) and take in the view.

  3. Spot the Pelicans!

Longstanding bird of the Cyclades, although not in its natural habitat, can be seen pottering around Mykonos and are known to be fairly photogenic.  Underpinning their significance to the island is the story of Petros, a pelican who was found wounded on the island during the 1950's. He was rescued and tended back to good health by a local fisherman and subsequently became the mascot of Mykonos.

4. Take a Boat Ride -

A wonderfully tranquil way to experience the island of Mykonos is by boat. Boat rides and hire are available from local beachfront vendors throughout the year. Be sure to stop at one of the islands certified snorkel spots and take a swim with the magical Mediteranean marine life beneath the waves.

5. Explore Panagia Paraportiani -

Situated to the North of the island this beautiful and character rich fishing village is home to another of Mykonos' special sights. Agios Efstathios Church is one of the most photographed in the world. This pretty building is not just one chapel but five, built one on top of another.

6. Sample a Gyro at Jimmy's -

The 'fast food' of Greece is as fresh as it gets. Jimmy's cafe is hugely popular with locals and tourists alike and is said to serve the best Gyro on the island... along with a divine menu of salads and freshly caught seafood to take away. We would highly recommend.
