Six Special Things to do in the City of London
Date : 2017-02-26

Rich with heritage, yet a cosmopolitan city in its own right, a visit to London promises endless opportunities - and timeless memories.

As one of the world's most recognisable cities, London has long been a popular destination for those travelling in Europe. In some instances, it is a convenient starting point for a tour around the continent, whilst in others it is a full and worthy destination in and of itself. Either way, London is a magnificent city, offering a multitude of experiences and activities to be explored, but like many of the greatest cities across the globe, there often seems so much to see and do that planning a trip can be slightly daunting.

We thought we would share our pick of 'must do's' whilst visiting the city - as a little food for thought.

1. The London Eye:

Whilst the London Eye may seem to be the sort of apparent tourist trap that a lot of seasoned travelers consciously avoid, we recommend that in this case you ditch the preconceptions, take a ride on what is essentially a huge ferris wheel right on the edge of the River Thames and enjoy unparalleled views of the cities skyline; which is particuarly beautiful on a clear evening.

 2. The Tate:

For the creatives amongst us, a visit to London would not be complete without time spent at The Tate. Housing a renowned collection of British art from across the ages and now with a second, 10 storey counterpart extending its appeal you may want to set aside an afternoon in which to meander the countless inspiring exhibitions of the moment. If travelling with your little ones be reassured that a range of creative crafts and workshops are offered throughout the gallery which are sure to keep them happy too.

 3. Explore Westminster Abbey:

This city landmark merits a special stop. A spectacular piece of architectural beauty on the outside and even more breathtaking within. With an extensive list of famous scholars, political figures and artists buried or memorialised beyond its surface (including the likes of Jane Austen and Lewis Carroll) the Abbey exudes a rich sense of history and a unique spirituality that will remain forever in your mind.

4. Shop Oxford Street

London has many famed shopping streets and districts but Oxford Street is arguably the best of them all. If you are a bit of a shopaholic, or even just curious about the area, it is well worth a stop. Peruse department stores, luxury boutiques, and quaint side streets that function as miniature shopping districts of their own.

 5. Kensington Roof Gardens:

This stylish and sophisticated venue, popular with London's elite, offers a delectable menu of contemporary British dishes and smooth cocktails, further enhanced by spellbinding city views.

 6. Go to the Theatre:

London is frequently referred to as the epi-centre of live performance, with many venues dotted around Soho and Shaftesbury Avenue showcasing a range of intimate, exciting and family orientated shows. If you are passionate about a certain play-wright you may want to plan a night at The Globe. Situated in an idyllic location on the banks of the river thames the building is a replica of the original theater which Shakespeare essentially turned into his home venue. His plays remain to be portrayed as they were hundreds of years ago, setting the scene for an experience as atmospheric as they come.
